Tree lopping gets a bad reputation because it's done badly so often — stubs left, too much canopy stripped, trees left looking like hat racks. Done correctly, with cuts made to proper laterals and no more than a quarter of the canopy removed at once, it's a legitimate way to manage height and reduce risk.
We do tree lopping across Minden and the Western Bay of Plenty. If a tree needs reducing, we'll tell you the right way to do it and what the result will look like. Free site visit — call 027 600 0446.
Crown reduction at Minden is most commonly needed on the macrocarpa and pine that dominate the lifestyle block landscape on the plateau. These trees were planted as shelter and have done their job well — but at fifteen to twenty metres in height on exposed ridgelines, they've become a wind risk rather than a wind break. We reduce them back to a manageable height using section cuts back to natural forks, leaving enough live crown to support the tree's ongoing health. Topping — cutting across a main leader without regard for the tree's structure — is not something we recommend. It results in weakly attached regrowth, decay at the cut site, and trees that are structurally worse after the work than before it. Crown reduction done correctly extends the shelter belt's functional life by decades. For eucalyptus on Minden properties — mostly blue gum on older sections — lopping can be done but these trees are vigorous resprouters and will grow back strongly, so the client needs to understand that a major reduction is often a temporary solution rather than a permanent one. WBOPDC rules apply. Consent is not normally required for macrocarpa and pine on rural Minden sections.
